Cara Woodhouse wears many hats. The sought-after interior designer is also an

e-commerce entrepreneur, social media influencer, book author and curator. She is known for crafting distinctive homes that are equally playful and sophisticated. For this month's Sketchbook, we asked Cara to share insight into her creative process, why she likes SkLO and why good design "makes her heart skip a beat."

Cara Woodhouse at SkLO

Q: How would you describe your design point-of-view?

A: I don't like to box myself into one design style. I really change up what I do on every project because it changes with each client, architecture, and location. I love to be challenged and I love to be innovative.

Q: Where do you begin the design process when working on a project?

A: I always start with my client. I work to understand them, how they live and how they want to feel within their home. That is always the jumping off point for me.

Q: You specify a lot of artisan and handmade furnishings in your interiors. What draws you to this work?

A: I love collaborating with artisans and makers on projects. I love when my clients specifically come to me for recommendations for custom and specialty designed pieces. These are the "wow factors" in my projects. I call it the "eye candy" of each space. I love creating spaces that make your heart skip up a beat!

Q: What role does decorative lighting play in your interiors?

A: Decorative lighting is everything. I always say it's like the jewelry for a space. Without it, spaces don't feel elevated.

Q: Color plays a large role in your work. What is the relationship between color and light in your spaces?

A: I love when color is incorporated into lighting. So many companies do not do this. This is one of the things l love most about SkLO light fixtures. SkLO's colored glass is so stunning because it is all handblown. The variation in some of the lights is almost milky like an ombre which creates such an unbelievable feeling in the spaces I design.

Q: You are known for covering and curating content from design trends to travel and beauty and are now involved in shoppable ventures and even TV. Since you see so much, how would you describe what catches your eye?

A: I always go off my gut instincts. It's all about how things make me feel. Things literally make my heart race. I get excited when I see something unbelievably beautiful. Trusting your inner self is everything for me. It has never led me in a wrong direction.

Q: What's on the horizon in terms of interior projects and business ventures?

A: Where do I begin?! I just installed one of the largest projects of my entire career, and in a few more weeks I will install another in Miami that I am very excited to share. I have my first book coming out in the fall of 2024, which I have been working on for two years. It will act as an informative, informational book that will also be beautiful. I am starting to get involved with real estate properties and launching my first shoppable, rentable home in Sag Harbor, New York, this summer. You can book a stay or shop online in each space of the home. I am launching a huge e-commerce site in May with incredible furniture designers and makers from around the globe. I have also just launched "Behind the Velvet Rope" which is a subscription based content site where we have incredible drops each month. I can go on and on... but the busier I am the better I function!

    Making Of

      Pinch Vessel

"The Pinch Vessels are about a simple technique we developed in collaboration with our Czech glassblowers. While the glass is hot on the pipe, it is hand-shaped to create a transition from the circular base to the oval opening at the top. This is accentuated by cutting and polishing the edges of the opening."
